Ένα μικροσκοπικό μαύρο Affenpinscher, που ακούει στο όνομα Banana Joe, κέρδισε την πρωτιά, την Τρίτη 12 Φεβρουαρίου 2013 στο Best in Show στο Westminster Kennel Λέσχη Dog στη Νέα Υόρκη.
Το αφεντικό του, ο Ερνέστο Lara, τον σήκωσε στον αέρα και τον τίναξε χαρούμενος, μετά τον τοποθέτησε δίπλα στο βάθρο του νικητή, όπου ο Banana Joe πήδησε επάνω σαν να ήταν γεννημένος νικητής!
Μετά την κατάκτηση του πρώτου τίτλου στην κατηγορία μικρού σκύλου (toy) , o Μπανάνα Τζο είχε να αντιμετωπίσει σοβαρά – για να μην αναφέρουμε πολύ μεγαλύτερα – ο ανταγωνισμός στον τελικό γύρο ήταν ανάμεσα στις καλύτερες φυλές εναντίον του άλλου.
Εναντίον του μικροσκοπικού σκύλου διαγωνιζόταν ένα γερμανικό Wirehaired πόιντερ, ένα φοξ τεριέ , ένας αμερικανικός κυνηγετικός σκύλος, ένα χνουδωτό άσπρο frize Bichon, ένα πορτογαλικό σκυλί νερού και ένα τεράστιο δασύτριχο αγγλικό τσοπανόσκυλο. Ο Swagger το τσοπανόσκυλο, το οποίο έμοιαζε με μια διασταύρωση ανάμεσα σε ένα λιοντάρι και μία μπάλα από βαμβάκι, ήταν ένα από τα αγαπημένα στο πλήθος, το οποίο κέρδιζε ενθουσιώδεις ζητωκραυγές κάθε φορά που έτρεxε γύρω από το πεδίο των κριτών. Κέρδισε το βραβείο του διαγωνισμού του δρομέα, που ονομάζεται Reserve Best in Show.
Υπήρξε επίσης συμπάθεια από το πλήθος για το μικρό Affenpinscher, και ο σκύλος ο ίδιος φάνηκε ικανοποιημένος από όλο τον ενθουσιασμό για την νίκη του, γλείφοντας τα παϊδάκια του..
“Νομίζω ότι είναι απλά ένα θαυμάσιο πράγμα, ένα αφιέρωμα για μια μικρή φυλή με μια τέτοια μεγάλη καρδιά», δήλωσε ο Λάρα. Το αφεντικό του είπε ότι ο πρωταθλητής τώρα θα επαναπαυτεί στις δάφνες του στην Ολλανδία. “Πρόκειται να αποσυρθεί πίσω στο σπίτι όπου γεννήθηκε», είπε. “Εκεί είναι όπου πρόκειται να περάσουν το υπόλοιπο της ζωής του.”
Ο Lara συνέστησε τον Affenpinscher ως κατοικίδιο ζώο, αλλά είπε ότι στην συγκεκριμένη φυλή αρέσει να έχει κάποια χαλαρότητα. Είναι ένα «πολύ ανθρώπινο σκυλί», είπε. “Θέλετε να το προσεγγίσετε και να γίνετε φίλος του.”
Για το στέμμα αγωνίστηκαν συνολικά 2.721 σκύλοι από 187 φυλές και ποικιλίες στο Westminster, το οποίο είναι ένα από τα πιο αναγνωρισμένα και με μεγάλο κύρος dog shows στον κόσμο.
Tiny Affenpinscher is America’s Top Dog
A tiny black affenpinscher called Banana Joe became top dog Tuesday by winning Best in Show at the Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show in New York.
His handler, Ernesto Lara, lifted him in the air and shook him joyfully, then placed him next to the winner’s podium, where Banana Joe leaped up like a born winner.
After conquering his toy dog category, Banana Joe had to face serious — not to mention much bigger — competition in the final round pitting the best in breeds against each other.
Up against the miniscule pooch were a German wirehaired pointer, a smooth fox terrier, an American foxhound, a fluffy white bichon frise, a Portuguese water dog and an enormous shaggy old English sheepdog.
Swagger the sheepdog, which resembled a cross between a lion and a cotton ball, was a crowd favorite, earning huge cheers every time he ran around the judging ring. He won the contest’s newly-created runner’s up spot, termed Reserve Best in Show.
There was also tangible sympathy in the crowd for the little affenpinscher, and the dog himself seemed delighted by all the excitement at his win, licking his chops, then getting a quick brush down.
“I think it’s just a wonderful thing, a tribute for a small breed with such a big heart,” Lara said.
The handler said the champion would now rest on his laurels in The Netherlands. “He’s going to retire back home where he was born,” he said. “That’s where he’s going to spend the rest of his life.”
Lara recommended the affenpinscher as a pet, but said the breed liked to be given some slack. It’s a “very human dog,” he said. “You want to befriend it.”
A total of 2,721 dogs from 187 breeds and varieties battled for the crown at Westminster, which is one of the most prestigious annual dog shows in the world.
